Murtala Muhammed International Airport Road
The Murtala Muhammed International Airport Road, which is the only access road towards the airport in Lagos, was upgraded from a four lane, duel carriageway to a 10 lane, dual carriageway motorway. With the high traffic volumes the City of Lagos supports and the limited available annual budget for road works, it was essential that the new road is not only widened, but also be able to support the traffic for an extended period of time.
Loudon International was approached by Hi-Tech Construction to assist with including a BSM layer the design and to assist with the constructing of a BSM layer with a Wirtgen WR 250 cold in-place recycler .
The pavement structure of the new roadway entailed the construction of a 150mm BSM layer on top of a 150mm G2 granular material resting on a 200mm cement stabilised C4 layer. The Contractor, Hi-Tech Construction, bought a new Wirtgen WR250 cold recycler to construct the BSM layer and the cemented selected layer. For the C4 layer a G5 material was imported form the local quarry and in-place stabilised with cement using the WR recycler. Once completed a 150mm G2 layer was constructed from imported material. A G2 quality material was then blended with RAP (Recycled Asphalt Pavement) from the existing airport approach road to a 50/50 ratio and in-place stabilised with 1% cement and 2.4% foam bitumen using the WR recycler. Once completed a 40mm asphalt wearing course was constructed as the final road surface.
